When most people think of fashion in England, likely their first thought would be of London, due to its wide acclaim and global popularity. However, while there is certainly something to be said about London fashion (blog coming soon!), within the younger, up-and-coming generations, Manchester has proven itself to be a hotspot for unique and artistic minds to express themselves in a multitude of ways, one of those primarily being through their personal style and fashion. In an article by Dazed Magazine, a group of those in their late teens and early twenties were asked to speak on their personal experience in Manchester and how it has had an influence on their way of dressing. In a quote from Pierce, a 20-year-old in Manchester, he said, “It’s so easy to have London be the centre of the universe, but Manchester is definitely very underappreciated for its style and its voice…” There is truly no one word to describe the eclectic voice that Manchester brings to the fashion world; it is a beautiful humdrum of unique, punk, layered, obscure, and hipster all at once. While it is severely underrated in terms of fashionable recognition, there is almost an optimistic side to it, as the people of Manchester are able to have a community that is so distinctive to themselves it creates a different level of specialty. Some of the people that emulate this to a T are Instagram influencers: Daisy Birchall, Ellie Robinson, and Ellis Hope. With around a following of 60k-200k on Instagram, they have built a strong and loyal audience that are drawn to the exquisite obscurity of Manc fashion.
While these three individuals have a similar aura about them, they of course have infused their social media platforms with their own individuality. Beginning with Daisy Birchall, she has proven to gorgeously use the whole spectrum of clothing sizing, pairing baggy pants or shorts with an oversized colorful sweater or t-shirt, or a micro tank top. By not only playing with the proportions of clothing pairing, but also being experimental and eccentric with accessories, she is able to put together looks that are so unique to herself while also perfectly explaining exactly what is so beautiful about Manchester’s personal style. Below are some examples of her street style looks, all taken in mundane, yet perfectly fitting locations.

Next, Ellie Robinson has taken a similar approach of mixing different factors of clothing together to create art-like looks. She has proven to be wonderfully experimental with patterns, textures, and materials. Below you can find mixes of denim and fur, with exciting prints such as cheetah print and stripes. By doing this, she has shown an exemplary model of advantageous femininity.

Finally, Ellis Hope is a model with J’adore Model Agency located in Manchester. Despite having the least amount of followers between the three, her talent of layering and accessorizing has made her stand out greatly among her peers. There is certainly no box for Ellis that limits the fashion choices she makes and her bold looks are a perfect example of the new era of fashion that has no guidelines. With a plethora of belts, necklaces, ribbons, and lace, she shows exactly how there are no rules for how anyone can dress.

As time moves forward, and unconventional looks become conventional, we can truly look back at individuals such as these and recognize the beauty of an underrated city like Manchester and see their impact on the watching world. There are no bounds for fashion, and Manchester has shown this specifically through their younger generations. Straying far from the modern outlook of strictly neutral, “business” fashion, the upcoming generations are breaking out of this to bring back the giddy fun that fashion originated from.
